The 2009 Oscar ceremony had a great Indian presence, not only with many nominations but also the whole cast and crew (almost all are Indians) of 'Slumdog Millionaire' who were present at the Grand Kodak theater.
I woke up early to watch the 'predestined' performance of the movie at one of the world's most prestigious film award ceremony on my idiot box.
I was praying.
I knew the whole of the fans of the movie were also praying.
'Oh! my God he created the history, the Mozart of Chennai did it again'. After ruling 'Golden Globe' and the 'BAFTA', he made the jury of the Oscar to dance to his tunes.
A.R. Rahman bagged two Oscar knights for Original Score and Best Song (with Gulzar) making all the music lovers in India be Proud of him. He was competing against the likes of ' Alexandre Desplat (The curious case of Benjamin Button)','Danny Elfman (Milk)',Thomas Newman (Wall-e)', and 'James Newton Howard(Defiance)'.
A.R. Rahman who truly deserve the honor is a man of few words.
His acceptance speech was as polite and humble as he is. His music said it all, which will echo for a long time to come.
After that he briefly performed his two nominated songs (O saaya... and Jai Ho..) which was an added delight.
The story of the underdog proceeded with the movie grabbing Eight Oscars in all the categories it was nominated (except sound editing).
Danny Boyle (Director) jumped with the excitement of a child on receiving the award for Best Director.
Christian Colson (Producer) invited the whole cast and crew of the movie on stage (Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Frieda Pinto, the Child actors and all) on receiving the award for Best film.
It is definitely a moment of pride for all the moviegoers who believe in good cinema. The winning is also a super binding glue for the lips of who are criticizing the movie for several reasons.
The movie is a story of hope with a truly Indian soul in it.
Among my favorites for Oscars was the winner Kate Winslet (Best Actress for 'The Reader'), whom I have always admired for her beauty and acting prowess.
